Caption Inserters

From the lab: the inserter depends on the media you are captioning

Closed Captioning

We strongly recommend using separate inserter hardware for captioning analog broadcast video.

Using a NLE to key the image of the closed caption waveforms onto line 21 has a host of technical problems.

Dedicated hardware, on the other hand, generates an accurate seven cycle decoder synchronizing wave form and then switches to a high bandwidth switching strategy to complete the each line 21 waveform with 2 bytes of digital data.

Snapping that digital signal from 20 IRE to 80 IRE is something most video quality digital to analog converters really aren't designed for.

Guess who get's blamed if a compromised closed caption signal falls apart in the distribution process?

So do yourself a favor and check out our links to closed caption inserter manufacturers.

DVD

Here's the good news: you don't need a caption inserter to do subtitling or closed captioning!

AutoCaption makes caption files called "resources" for most DVD authoring packages.  The bad news (you knew this was coming didn't you?) is that you need a DVD authoring package to put the video, audio, chapter marks, menus and captioning all together into a master DVD image.

Subtitling

AutoCaption works with the MagniCoder Premier MCP-601 to burn in subtitles generated from your computer.

We're quite pleased with the reputation and quality of Magni Systems hardware.
